WANT TO LEVEL UP YOUR SONG COVERS AND GET SEEN?
This is the strategy I used to build an online fanbase & get recognized (and reposted) by ICONS in the music industry.
Nowadays, if you're an independent artist and want to get your music heard, you NEED to be growing an online audience... otherwise you're missing out on so many music opportunities or ways to connect with listeners/fans. So how do you stand out when everyone else is trying to do the same?
Hi, I'm Nicole, a musician who has grown an online fanbase by posting song covers online on my Instagram account. I have learned dedicated a ton of time and energy into on social media while growing as an artist. Before we jump into the how, let me just say that posting song covers on Instagram have built the foundation for my music career. So when you take it seriously, here's what can happen...
I’ve had the incredible experience of being recognized by some of my favorite musicians, like Tom DeLonge, Travis Barker, and Billie Joe Armstrong. But let me tell you—none of that happened overnight.
Over the years, I learned what makes song covers pop online, and I want to share it with you. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to grow your following, I’m going to show you exactly what worked for me and how it can work for you.

WHY DO SONG COVERS MATTER?
Song covers are a great way to not only attract an audience who likes the same music genre, but also get in front of people in the industry.
Here are some reasons why song covers work so well when growing an audience as a musician on Instagram:
- Attracting an audience who has similar music taste
- Creating familiarity with your current audience (e.g. if you post 80s rock covers, they'll be excited and waiting for more of that content!)
- Recognizing other artists' work, increasing the chances they might recognize you back (not guaranteed, but very much increases your chances)
- Bettering your own musicianship skills and techniques
- Endless supply of content ideas!
If you're just starting out your music journey or trying to grow your online following, song covers is a great place to start!
SQUASH THE misconceptions
I used to assume you needed certain qualifications to be successful. But here's the thing, I started my account to learn how to play my instrument and grew my first few thousand Instagram followers using my iPod Touch (here's a story on how).
You DON'T need the expensive gear. You DON'T have to be the best musician.
Work with what you have and bring people along for the journey, no matter what stage you're at.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO GET NOTICED👇🏻
Okay, now you're ready to start getting notices as a musician through song covers.
I broke down the few key things that helped me get noticed by musicians
Here's the method that helped me grow my following and unlock some crazy opportunities like landing my first gig.
- Pick Songs That Light You Up: Choose tracks you’re passionate about, and your excitement will be contagious.
- Bring the Energy: Your stage presence matters, even if you’re filming in your bedroom.
- Post Consistently: Show up regularly. Let your audience know you’re serious about your music.
- Be Authentic: Don’t strive for perfection and don't overthink it. Be real—people want to connect with the real you.
The KEY is to make creating content fun and always keep learning. Your energy will become infectious and people will not only watch your content, but keep coming back for more!
Remember, keep showing up and learning from each of your posts. It's all about the small tweaks to continuously improve. But most importantly, it's about showing up and posting the content that makes you feel good.
